Declared dead hundreds of times, always risen. Nowadays no one doubts that bitcoin is destined to remain in the financial scene. More and more listed companies are holding part of their assets in bitcoin, the number of funds in cryptocurrencies is growing constantly, as is the interest from investors. But what are cryptocurrencies, how do they work, what is the economic theory behind them and what link is there between Austrian economists and the disruptive success of these new financial assets?

Description:
We will first discover what the blockchain is and who the relevant players in the blockchain space are (miners, nodes, wallet providers, exchanges, oracles). We will than discuss the bitcoin case, why is this asset class becoming attractive also for institutional investors and what is the money theory behind it. We will explore the future of the money market with the issuance of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and stable coins. After a brief explanation of the token taxonomy we will dive into the regulation field. We will first discover the law issued in Switzerland, the FINMA guidelines as well as relevant soft law. We will take a closer look to anti-money laundering, starting with the FATF recommendation for virtual asset and VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider) and discuss how to use the blockchain to discover what a digital asset was used for and what are the indicia of money laundering with crypto assets. Thereafter, we will take a look into the future ahead, with the new law on amendment of federal laws to the developments of the DLT technology. We will first analyze the new security form: the registered uncertificated security, which will allow to create securities on a blockchain by law. Then we will discuss the new Distributed Ledger Technology Trading Value authorization, which will allow to run a trading venue on the blockchain with less stringent requirements compared to a traditional trading venue. Will this conduct to the establishment of a trading venue in every bank? Finally you will experience the finance of the future with a short introduction to smart contracts and decentralized finance and an explanation on how today in the crypto world you can execute complex transaction without any human intervention.
